Z mojej płytoteki: the Residents - Commercial Album. Najbardziej zakręcona płyta wszechczasów, 40 piosenek w 40 minut!

Dzisiaj płyta absolutnie zakręcona. I od razu zachęcam osoby, które nie lubią awangardy, żeby spróbowały chociaż obejrzeć filmik skomponowany z teledysków do wszystkich piosenek. Ilu? A tak: czterdziestu. Nie, nie, to nie pomyłka, bowiem siódma w dorobku zespołu płyta The Residents, zatytułowana Commercial Album, to aż 40 jednominutowych piosenek. Płyta z tego co słyszałem, była typowana do wpisu do Księgi Rekordów Guinnessa. A poznałem ją bodajże dzięki Jerzemu Janiszewskiemu, w latach 80-tych ubiegłego wieku. Pamiętam jak powiedział w audycji: czterdzieści jednominutowych perełek...

I my dzisiaj te perełki sobie dokładnie obejrzymy. Najpierw jednak, żeby zrozumieć Commercial Album pozwolę sobie tutaj postawić własną tezę, którą postaram się udowodnić w dalszej części wpisu. Postawienie jej umożliwiły mi następujące fakty: zainteresowanie muzyką the Beatles i znajomość ich dyskografii, oraz obejrzenie filmiku z wszystkimi 40-oma klipami. Filmiku, którego wcześniej nie widziałem, a zobaczyłem kilka dni temu, gdy postanowiłem napisać o płycie. Ale po kolei. 

Pierwsza płyta the Residents - awangardowego zespołu z USA (prawdopodobnie obecnie mieszkającego w San Francisco), którego skład nie jest do dziś nikomu znany, nazywa się Meet the Residents... Czy to przypadek, że nazwa pierwszego w amerykańskiej dyskografii albumu the Beatles wydanego przez Capitol (1964) brzmi Meet the Beatles? Porównajmy okładki...

Panów wydaje się być również czterech. Po tym wstępie pora na moją tezę. The Residents - Commercial Album jest awangardową wersją płyty Yellow Submarine Beatlesów. A film Commercial DVD, do którego zaraz przejdę to awangardowa wersja słynnej kreskówki czwórki z Liverpoolu. 

Zaraz, ale tak w ogóle po co o tym wszystkim piszemy? Otóż płyta, która na początku wydaje się być jakimś żartem, jest miksem komedii, horroru i nostalgii. Obok żartobliwych piosenek porusza też bardzo istotne egzystencjalne  tematy: śmierć, nieudane związki, źle ulokowane uczucia, lęki... Kto widział Yellow Submarine Beatlesów ten dobrze wie, że chwilami nie jest to wesoły filmik o miłości. Że obok zabawnych scenek i śmiesznych dialogów mamy tam chwile bardzo nostalgiczne jak choćby Elanor Rigby czy Only a Northern Song, tematy wcale nie do śmiechu... 

O podobieństwach jeszcze wspomnę ale najpierw kilka ciekawostek. The Residents nagrali i zmontowali sami cztery teledyski, reszta powstała później. Natomiast promocja płyty odbyła się poprzez wykupienie czasu reklamowego w lokalnej TV i radio i nadawanie klipów jako reklam. Czyż to nie jest genialne? Czy nie przypomina to słynnych manifestów dadaistów, egzystencjalistów i innych? Po epoce dzieci kwiatów i love love love, epoce fuck off  i no future punków, przyszedł czas na manifest antykomercji.

Jak? Przez wydanie płyty czysto komercyjnej. Jak wygląda manifest? Jest prosty, zawiera zaledwie 5 punktów:

Zatem mamy kolekcję dżingli, a jeśli chcemy mieć POP puśćmy każdy trzy razy...

The Residents zaprosili do realizacji płyty wielu wykonawców (TUTAJ): Snakefinger, Chris Cutler, Fred Frith, Lene Lovich, Andy Partridge i innych. Płyta nagrywana była od września 1979 do lipca 1980. Jak wspomniałem Phonogram i Celluloid Records zasponsorowało nagranie czterech klipów nazwanych One Minute Movies, czyli piosenek:  Moisture, The Act of Being Polite, Perfect Love, i Simple Song:

Płyta wydana jest w małej wytwórni więc nie oczekujmy cudów, choć w warstwie graficznej jest przyzwoicie. Szkoda że nie ma tekstów, ale wynagrodzimy to zaraz sobie poniżej.

To teraz pora na wszystkie filmiki razem, czyli Commercial DVD. I tutaj mamy już kompletny odlot. Więc może zastanówmy się co reklamują poszczególne piosenki, pozwolę sobie również zamieścić teksty. Jeśli interpretacja nie będzie dla mnie jasna, pozostawię ją z samym tekstem (w nawiasie podaję nazwiska realizatorów klipów - dżingli).

Jedyna miłość warta uwagi to ta, która odchodzi, inne osiągają wzloty i upadki ale zawsze są do dupy, co udowadniają w sposób pokazany w klipie...

3) Picnic Boy (the Residents):

Oh, she called my friend a picnic boy
Said he was too fat
Fat

I left her in the early morning
Looking at the rain, ohoh!
I found I could not take the pressure
So I took the train, ho! 

4) End of Home (the Residents):

Pierwszy  bardzo smutny utwór o końcu ludzkich uczuć, choć trudno jest wnioskować czym spowodowany był ów koniec domu, widać na teledysku że zawala się, a na twarzy bohatera pojawia się łza smutku...

5) Amber (Doug Carney):

Life is just a situation
Life is just a game
Life is just a whirlwind
And it's calling out my name

Amber were the autumn leaves
And amber was her skin

Przechodzimy do utworu typowo satyrycznego, z nieco absurdalnym tekstem. A co do klipu, cóż... jest równie zabawny jak i tekst. Mówiąc w skrócie: shit happens

6) Japanese Watercolor (Martin Redlich) - utwór instrumentalny, japonka, która zanurza się we wodzie, ma w dalszej części klipu pomalowaną tradycyjnie dla kobiet w towarzystwie, twarz. W tle fabryka, w końcu czerwony napis for sale. Biały i czerwony to barwy japońskiej flagi, ale czy coś więcej autor miał na myśli? 

7) Secrets (The Penguin Bros):

Teledysk w konwencji horroru, wizje senne albo urojenia głównego bohatera, fobie i strach rządzące ludzkością. W pewien sposób sami doprowadzamy do ich powstawania... 

8) Die in Terror (Incorect):

To feel the crawling flesh of panic
As her hair turned white
She also had a pretty little
See-through negligee

9) Red Rider (Casey Stockdon):

Jedna z moich ulubionych piosenek na tym albumie. Teledysk o wynalazcy, który stara się skonstruować pojazd za wzór biorąc kury, którym z nieznanych bliżej powodów zakłada czerwone opaski. Zostaje załatwiony przez obrończynię zwierząt - rudowłosą dziewczynę na rowerze...    

10) My Second Wife (Jean-Charles-Finck):

Yesterday my second wife fell in the afternoon
Slipped into hysteria and talked about the moon
Well this was only temporary so the doctor said
So I watched a football game and she went off to bed

Trudny temat, być może jest to tylko czarny humor, a może chodzi o coś więcej, jak na przykład o przemoc w rodzinie...

Różne mogą być interpretacje tego tekstu, niemniej do wspaniałej muzyki mamy bardzo poetycki tekst ze znakomitym zbitkiem: I see the sea the sea sees me. Może być to tekst o najeździe zamiejscowych na miejskie plaże, ale może to być też utwór o głębokim podłożu erotycznym...

Piosenka o ojcu, który dostrzega przemijający czas oglądając swoje dziecko. Pod koniec pojawia się słowny manifest - warto zatrzymać film i przeczytać...

Kolejny minihorror, czyli z pamiętnika mordercy psychopaty, wyczerpanego aktem bycia niegrzecznym. 

17) Medicine Man (Andrew Coehler)- znakomity utwór instrumentalny, ale i teledysk w stylu obrazów Hieronima Boscha, nadchodzi wielki kataklizm... 

18) Tragic Bells (Chip Lord):

Tragic bells are ringing for me
Tragic bells are ringing in my ear again

And I don't know why I'm going on

Bardzo smutny utwór wpisany w obraz wielkiego miasta, nieco przypomina klimatem Shadowplay Joy Division, oczywiście klimatem obrazu nie muzyki.   

19) Loss of Innocence (Jim Ludtke/the Residents)

Amusement parks are caked with sounds
A solid hunk of meat

Piosenka poświęcona pamięci Jima Ludke (1954-2004), który był między innymi twórcą gier komputerowych inspirowanych muzyką the Residents (TUTAJ).

Pogoń i zdobywanie kolejnych szczebli kariery nigdy się nie kończy, zawsze jest coś wyżej... Czy zatem warto?

Wynalazca uszczęśliwiający innych, wszystko jednak na darmo bo obdarowywani są na zbyt niskim szczeblu rozwoju. 

24) Phantom (Rosto A.D.) - utwór instrumentalnym jeden z muzyków jest duchem. Trudno powiedzieć, czy pasiaki pojawiające się zamiast ubrań są jakimś nawiązaniem od wojny.

Wydaje się, że piosenka opisuje wahania związane z próbą samobójczą, jednak teledysk do tego nie nawiązuje.

Jeden z najlepszych utworów na płycie. Pierwsze dwa wersy to poetyckie mistrzostwo. Połączenie klimatu egzystencjalnigo z uczuciami, czyli miłość w wielkim mieście..   
Warto zwrócić uwagę na łodź płynącą po niebie i wyglądające z niej głowy członków zespołu. Na tym opieram tezę, że płyta jest awangardową wersją Yellow Submarine the Beatles. Ale jest 20 lat później, ponuro i z epoki dzieci kwiatów świat przeszedł w czasy lęków egzystencjalnych... 

28) Handful of Desire (Kar Aermann):

Ta piosenka również moim zdaniem jest hitem. I nie dziwię się, że ludzie odbierali teledyski jako minireklamy. Zawilgocona kobieta w której portmonetce znaleziono po jej śmierci ślimaka. Klimat kompletnie odjazdowy...

I cała płyta do dosłuchania:

Myślę, że Ian Curtis, który tak lubił powieści Williama S. Burroughsa (TUTAJ) byłby zachwycony tą płytą. To przecież podobny, odlotowy klimat. Nie zapomnijcie, że poznaliście go dzięki nam. 

Czytajcie nas - codziennie nowy wpis, tego nie znajdziecie w mainstreamie.
