Today we present short interview with Mr. Brian Gorman (see HERE). He is the author of New Dawn Fades - A Graphic Novel About Joy Division and Manchester (see HERE). In Manchester you can also see the theatrical play of the same title. The book has an introduction by the well-known music critic Mick Middles (athor of famous books about Ian Curtis and Joy Division). Mr Gorman is also the author of a new graphic novel called Atmosphere. See the trailer:

 Dzisiaj przedstawiamy krótki wywiad z panem Brianem Gormanem (TUTAJ), który jest autorem powieści graficznej o Joy Division i Manchesterze - New Dawn Fades - (czytaj TUTAJ). W Manchesterze można także zobaczyć sztukę teatralną o tym samym tytule. Książka ma wstęp znanego krytyka muzycznego Micka Middlesa (autora słynnych książek o Ianie Curtisie i Joy Division). Pan Gorman jest także autorem nowej powieści graficznej zatytułowanej Atmosphere (zwiastun powyżej).

Hello Mr Gorman, our first question is about your recent project "New Dawn Fades". Is this performance still played in Manchester?

Dzień dobry Panie Gorman, nasze pierwsze pytanie dotyczy Pana ostatniego projektu „New Dawn Fades”. Czy ta sztuka jest nadal wystawiana w Manchesterze?
 

We have been performing New Dawn Fades almost every year, since 2013. The show was recently performed last September in Manchester and London. We were planning another UK tour for 2020, and had been investigating getting some sponsors onboard, as we are an independent company, with no arts funding whatsoever. Last year, my producer Giles Bastow (who also plays Rob Gretton in the show) and I were looking at raising more funds to enable us to take the show further afield, and we had our sights on Berlin and New York (amongst other places). Since the lockdown, all plans are on hold, until live venues are able to open again.

New Dawn Fades wystawiamy prawie co roku, od 2013. Sztuka została ostatnio zaprezentowana we wrześniu ubiegłego roku w Manchesterze i Londynie. Planowaliśmy kolejną trasę po Wielkiej Brytanii na 2020 rok i sprawdzaliśmy możliwość pozyskania sponsorów, ponieważ jesteśmy niezależną firmą, która nie ma żadnych funduszy na sztukę. W zeszłym roku mój producent, Giles Bastow (który gra też w sztuce Roba Grettona), i ja chcieliśmy zebrać więcej środków, aby umożliwić kontynuację przedsięwzięcia - mieliśmy plany wystawienia sztuki w Berlinie i Nowym Jorku (między innymi). Niestety od czasu blokady (Covid 19) wszystkie plany są wstrzymane, dopóki miejsca występów na żywo nie będą mogły zostać ponownie otwarte.

In one of your previous interviews you mentioned that you did not attend Joy Division gigs. Why is their music so important for you?

W jednym z poprzednich wywiadów wspomniał Pan, że nie uczestniczył nigdy w koncertach Joy Division. Dlaczego ich muzyka jest dla Pana tak ważna?
 

I was only 16 in 1980, and my family were not into contemporary music. I collected film soundtracks, and loved the work of John Barry. His music, to me, was inspiring, exciting, and always very melancholic. I was drawn to that style of music, and really liked New Order, but I was unaware that they had emerged from a previous band (Joy Division). I didn't read the music press, and was totally unaware of Ian Curtis. It was only when I moved to Manchester in 2006, that I finally heard Unknown Pleasures. I immediately bought the album, with Closer, and Still. That was it! Immediately, they became my favourite band. I just loved the sound - melancholic, yet uplifting and exciting. And very much like a film soundtrack. There was such an atmosphere to the music, and the lyrics were incredibly poetic, sombre, and enigmatic. I am extremely late in coming to Joy Division, but I think that made me more determined to discover everything about them, and put it into a stage play and graphic novel (as nobody else had tried to!). Control came out just as I was thinking of writing about the band, and I saw that as a good omen. I've only recently discovered the amazing Nick Drake, who I think bears many similarities to Ian Curtis.

W 1980 roku miałem zaledwie 16 lat, a moja rodzina nie interesowała się muzyką nowoczesną. Kolekcjonowałem ścieżki dźwiękowe z filmów i pokochałem twórczość Johna Barry'ego. Jego muzyka była dla mnie inspirująca, ekscytująca i zawsze bardzo melancholijna. Pociągał mnie taki styl muzyki i bardzo lubiłem New Order, ale nie byłem świadomy, że mają korzenie w poprzednim zespole, czyli Joy Division. Nie czytałem prasy muzycznej i byłem całkowicie nieświadomy istnienia Iana Curtisa. Dopiero kiedy przeprowadziłem się do Manchesteru w 2006 roku, w końcu usłyszałem Unknown Pleasures. Natychmiast kupiłem albumy Closer i Still. To było to! Od razu stali się moim ulubionym zespołem. Po prostu uwielbiałem ten dźwięk - melancholijny, ale podnoszący na duchu i ekscytujący. I bardzo przypominający filmowe ścieżki dźwiękowe. W muzyce panowała specyficzna atmosfera, a teksty były niesamowicie poetyckie, ponure i zagadkowe. Bardzo późno odkryłem Joy Division, ale myślę, że to sprawiło, że byłem bardziej zdeterminowany, aby odkryć wszystko o nich i umieścić to w sztuce scenicznej i powieści graficznej (jak nikt inny wcześniej nie próbował!). Control ukazał się właśnie w momencie, gdy myślałem o pisaniu o zespole, i uznałem to za dobry znak. Dopiero niedawno odkryłem niesamowitego Nicka Drake'a, który moim zdaniem jest podobny do Iana Curtisa.

Indeed! Following the success of New Dawn Fades, a few people have asked about a possible sequel. I've never been too sure, because it was Joy Division's music, and Curtis' lyrics that are a major draw for me. However, I met Tony Davidson

when he came to see the show, and was amazed to discover he was the actual owner of T J Davidson's Studios, and was once asked to manage the band by Ian Curtis!! This gave me an idea - how about a second play that would overlap with New Dawn Fades, but would concentrate on the studios, and all the bands that rehearsed there in the late 70s and early 80s? I could write new scenes that would expand on what I'd covered in New Dawn Fades, include Ian Curtis before he died, and also explore what impact Joy Division had on the Manchester post-punk scene. With Tony's help, I also have a first-hand view of what actually happened back then.

Jasne! Po sukcesie New Dawn Fades kilka osób zapytało o możliwość kontynuacji. Nigdy nie byłem zbyt przekonany bo muzyka Joy Division i teksty Curtisa są dla mnie dużym wyzwaniem. Jednak spotkałem Tony'ego Davidsona, kiedy przyszedł zobaczyć przedstawienie, i byłem zdziwiony, gdy dowiedziałem się, że jest faktycznym właścicielem wytwórni T J Davidsona, a Ian Curtis poprosił go kiedyś o zarządzanie zespołem !! To podało mi pomysł - a może druga sztuka, która pokryłaby się z New Dawn Fades, ale koncentrowała się na studiach i wszystkich zespołach, które ćwiczyły tam pod koniec lat 70. i na początku lat 80.? Mógłbym napisać nowe scnariusze, które rozwiną to, co opisałem w New Dawn Fades, również opiszą Iana Curtisa przed jego śmiercią, a także zbadają wpływ Joy Division na scenę post-punk w Manchesterze. Z pomocą Tony'ego mam również bezpośredni wgląd w to, co się wtedy wydarzyło.

We have noticed that you are looking for the financial support of your new project. How and where may we support this idea? Why Manchester authorities cannot support this?

 Zauważyliśmy, że szuka Pan wsparcia finansowego dla nowego projektu. Jak i gdzie możemy wesprzeć ten pomysł? Dlaczego władze Manchesteru nie mogą go poprzeć? 

Crowdfunding is a fantastic way to get projects made. It also gives me complete artistic freedom, as I do not have to fit in with any constraints an arts grant may require. We have applied for arts funding for New Dawn Fades, more than once, and never got it. Many major artists use crowdfunding, and I think it's the best option for my graphic novels. It also means that fans get to be part of the action. They literally help to create the book, and will benefit from their name being in the very first editions, plus other exclusive perks like invitations to the book launch, original artwork, etc. Fans can find more details on the crowdfunder, here: ATMOSPHERE: A GRAPHIC NOVEL

Finansowanie społecznościowe to fantastyczny sposób na tworzenie projektów. Daje mi to także pełną swobodę artystyczną, ponieważ nie muszę dostosowywać się do żadnych ograniczeń, jakie może wymagać dotacja artystyczna. Wielokrotnie ubiegaliśmy się o fundusze na New Dawn Fades i nigdy ich nie otrzymaliśmy. Is in your opinion Ian Curtis sufficiently commemorated in Manchester? We still cannot visit museum with memorablia of him, and there is also no his monument in Manchester. Maybe the reason of this is his suicide?

Czy Pana zdaniem Ian Curtis jest wystarczająco upamiętniony w Manchesterze? Nadal nie możemy odwiedzić muzeum z jego pamiątkami, a także nie ma jego pomnika w mieście. Może przyczyną tego jest jego samobójstwo? 

Actually, I prefer that he is remembered, but not revered like The Beatles in Liverpool, for instance. It's like a small, enthusiastic cult. New Order have the DNA, and Peter Hook continues to perform regularly, so the music and lyrics are still alive and kicking. Musicians don't have that many statues, and I think Ian (and the band) would feel a bit odd if statues were ever erected to them. It's the music that counts, and I hope (in some small way) that New Dawn Fades and Atmosphere will help to spread the word.

I don't think suicide has anything to do with a lack of memorials, either. I think a small plaque, here and there, would be nice; to remind people, and encourage curious tourists. Maybe at the Factory club, or somewhere on Little Peter Street. I know there was a campaign to name the motorway bridge in Hulme after Ian (the one in the famous Kevin Cummins photograph), but it hasn't happened yet. I suspect that many music fans in Manchester would feel it to be a bit pompous to have major memorials. We've only just got one for Emmeline Pankhurst! We also now have a Tony Wilson Place, so there is hope.

Liczy się muzyka i mam nadzieję (w niewielkim stopniu), że New Dawn Fades i Atmosphere pomogą rozpowszechnić informacje. Nie sądzę też, by samobójstwo miało coś wspólnego z brakiem pomników. Myślę, że mała tablica tu i tam byłaby miła; aby przypominać ludziom i zachęcać ciekawskich turystów. Może w klubie Factory lub gdzieś na Little Peter Street? Wiem, że była kampania na rzecz nazwania mostu - autostrady w Hulme ku czci Iana (tym na słynnej fotografii Kevina Cumminsa - warto zobaczyć TUTAJ), ale jeszcze to się nie wydarzyło. Podejrzewam, że wielu fanów muzyki w Manchesterze czułoby się trochę pompatycznie, mając jakieś wielkie miejsca kultu. Mamy tylko jeden dla Emmeline Pankhurst! Mamy też teraz Tony Wilson Place, więc jest nadzieja.
 

Is this possible that there will be a Joy Division museum at 77 Barton Street? Do you know the situation?

Czy to możliwe, że przy 77 Barton Street powstanie muzeum Joy Division? Czy zna Pan aktualną sytuację?

 

I actually chatted to the man who bought the house a few years ago, and a friend of mine went to see the inside (he had a very spooky experience, which I would need his permission to discuss, one day!) It was supposed to open as a museum, but I don't know why it still hasn't. I suspect it may be down to the fact that the house is in a narrow street, in a residential area. Personally, I think it should probably stay as it is. A hidden place that (respectful) fans can stroll by at times. As the scene of Ian's suicide, it may also be insensitive to turn it into a museum. However, there are people I know, in Macclesfield, who have regular Joy Division themed events, and the footbridge at the rail station has a large photo of the band, with some information.

Rozmawiałem z człowiekiem, który kupił dom kilka lat temu, i mój przyjaciel poszedł zobaczyć wnętrze (miał bardzo przerażające doświadczenie, ale potrzebowałbym jego zgody na opowiedzenie o nim!) otwarte jako muzeum, ale nie wiem, dlaczego wciąż tak nie jest. Podejrzewam, że może to wynikać z faktu, że dom znajduje się przy wąskiej uliczce, w dzielnicy mieszkalnej. Osobiście uważam, że prawdopodobnie powinien on pozostać takim, jaki jest. Ustronne miejsce, do którego czasami (pełni szacunku) fani mogą przyspacerować. Miejsce samobójstwa Iana przekształcone w muzeum może być dowodem braku wrażliwości. Są jednak ludzie, których znam, w Macclesfield, którzy regularnie odbywają imprezy tematyczne w Joy Division, a kładka na dworcu kolejowym zawiera duże zdjęcie zespołu z pewnymi informacjami.
